When you start a diet just about the most often heard pieces of advice is to keep a food journal in which you write down every thing you eat during the day. Keeping your foods log not only helps you see clearly what you are eating, it helps you see what you are not eating. One example is that, after following your nutrition for a few days you might realize that you are consuming far too many sugars and unhealthy fats but not nearly enough organic nutrients. Writing all of it down can help you see specifically which parts of your diet really need to change as well as how much exercise you are going to need to do to make sure that you keep your caloric intake in check.

Be as precise as possible when you write down what you take in. It is not enough to just write down "salad" on a list. Write down all the ingredients in the salad as well as the type of dressing you used. You should also note down just how much of the foods you are eating. "Cereal" defintely wont be adequate although "one cup Fiber One cereal" is acceptable. Remember the more you consume of something the more calories you take in so it is very important that you list quantities so you know exactly how much of everything youre eating and how many calories you need to burn.

Record your mood while you eat. This could show you whether you use meals to solve emotional issues. It will even identify the foods you decide on when you are in certain moods. There a wide range of people who seek out junk food when they feel angry or depressed and are just as likely to pick out healthy things when they feel happy and content. When you pay attention to how you eat while in your different moods and psychological states, you will be able to keep similar but healthier options around for when you need those snacks--you might also start talking to someone who can help you figure out why you try to cure your moods with food.
